Stone South Park Soft Opening

Stone South Park opened its doors for the first time to the public on Wednesday 6/15/2011. My wife and I had the opportunity to be one of the first few people in the door (#9 and #10 to be exact). We had a short wait at the door after the scheduled 4pm opening while they made their last minute preparations (the rumor that quickly circulated among the 20 or so people gathered outside was that it had something to do with setting up their cash register). Nonetheless, we made it inside quickly and had our 3oz tasting glass and flight of 4 tasters for $5 in hand quickly. The store filled up quickly in the hour or so that we were there. It was a very low key opening, oddly subdued for Stone's aggressive marketing strategy. I spoke with Chris from Stone about it and the goal is to ease into the South Park neighborhood and show that they are not just another bar, that they won't be loud and obnoxious to the neighbors, and that they are there to support the craft beer scene in South Park, not compete with it. This explains why they will only be offering growler fills and one tasting flight per person per day - no pints. The only thing that would have made the soft opening a little better would have been some music. Supposedly, that was supposed to get set up later, but it didn't happen by the time we left.

  1. Is it related to Stone Brewery or completely separate? Looks like a cool place.

  2. Yep! It's Stone Brewing's new South Park location. The first location outside the main brewery. They are opening a small brewery, with a restaurant and beer garden in Point Loma (Liberty Station) sometime next year too.
